Essential Pool Maintenance Tips for Homeowners

A well-maintained pool provides enjoyment and relaxation. Here are essential tips to keep your pool in top shape.

Regular Skimming and Scrubbing

Skim the leaves and debris off the surface of your pool regularly, ideally every few days. This prevents leaves and bugs from sinking to the bottom and becoming harder to remove. Scrub the sides and tiles of your pool weekly to remove algae and dirt. Use a brush and some elbow grease on those spots that don't get much sun, as they tend to encourage growth.

Pay attention to the water level in your pool as well. It should be midway up the opening of your skimmer. If it's too low, it can cause the pump to run dry. If it's too high, the skimmer won’t work as efficiently. Maintain a proper water level by using a garden hose to fill the pool or a pump to remove water when necessary.

Clean the Pool's Filter

Your pool’s filter is essential for removing dirt and impurities from the water. Clean the filter basket at least once a week to maintain efficient operation. Depending on your type of filter—cartridge, sand, or diatomaceous earth—follow specific cleaning instructions, which could range from hosing down the cartridge to backwashing sand or earth filters.

Make sure to note the pressure gauge on your filter system. When the pressure rises 10 psi above its normal reading, it's time to clean your filter. Keeping a clean filter ensures efficient water circulation and helps to maintain clean water, which is crucial for a healthy swimming environment.

Maintain Proper Chemical Levels

Checking and maintaining the right chemical levels in your pool is crucial for safety and clarity. Test your pool water at least once a week. The pH level should be between 7.4 and 7.6, while chlorine should be between 1.0 and 3.0 parts per million. If levels are off, adjust as recommended by adding the necessary chemicals.

Aside from chlorine and pH, check for calcium hardness and total alkalinity. Calcium levels should be between 200-400 ppm to prevent scaling, and alkalinity should be between 80-120 ppm to stabilize your pH. Regularly adding the right pool chemicals helps in maintaining clear and safe water conditions.
